From Tobacco to Pumpkins
Gretna, VA – With Halloween right around the corner, right now is the perfect time to go pumpkin picking. And one local farmer is pulling out all the stops to bring in visitors. Jay Nuckols is getting creative, offering things like a pumpkin hunt for kids and even a giant castle made out of hay. At White Fall Farm, you’ll find pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and colors.
“The big pumpkins are called prize winners and they’re my favorite they’re dark red reddish orange,” Nuckols said.
Nuckols grows a lot of different things on his farm, but he says pumpkins are his favorite.
“Pumpkins are the greatest things to sell or to give away because if you hand somebody a pumpkin you always get a smile and its a very rewarding thing to do,” Nuckols said.
And since he stopped growing tobacco about three years ago, it’s also a fair source of income.
“It is a supplement to the farm and hasn’t yet replaced tobacco but we’re working on it,” he said.
Nuckols says he spent two days putting together an enormous hay castle to draw in more visitors.
“I think its because of the castle. I think people are really interested in this castle I’ve built and I think that’s why they’re coming.”
And it seems to be working. Kids and adults who visit say it’s the most impressive part of the patch. Whether it’s the castle, the activities or the maze, Nuckols just hopes more people will visit his pumpkin patch.
