Dumbledore hides his smokes in his robes
We don’t know which one of these tidbits about Michael Gambon surprises us the most.
One, that the man who inherited the role of Albus Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has never read any of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.
Or two, that Gambon hid cigarettes in his robe while portraying the beloved Hogwarts headmaster.
On not reading Rowling’s words …
“You’d get upset about all the scenes it’s missing from the book, wouldn’t you?” Gambon tells the L.A. Times’ Hero Complex blog. “No point in reading the books because you’re playing with (screenwriter) Steve Kloves’ words.”
Point taken.
And then contactmusic.com reveals that Gambon had costume designers tailor the silk robes he wore as Dumbledore to include a hidden pocket for his cigarettes because he got tired of leaving the set for quick smokes.
Director David Yates confirmed the alteration: “Michael cleverly conceals a packet of fags below the lower part of the gown.”
Hey kiddies, see if you can spot Dumbledore’s cigs.
